Earn More, Save More, Spend LessOf course, we would all like to earn more money, have more in our savings accounts, and spend a bit less without going without. Can it be done? You might be surprised to find the places that you can find money in your budget without making significant sacrifices, ways you can take advantage of programs your employer offers to earn more and other tips and tricks to improve your overall financial well being. How can you earn more? Well, obviously, you could ask for a raise or get a second job, but most of us may not be able to get the first and do not even want the latter. You can, however, take advantage of those options already available. Are you using the 401K program your employer offers? In many cases, this option will both allow you to save more and earn more. In case of an emergency, you may even be able to borrow against these funds. You may also want to look into other pre-tax programs offered by your employer. These cafeteria plans may incorporate dependent care programs, adoption assistance and more. Should these be offered, they can help you earn more than you might expect at your regular day job.
So, if you are earning more, can you save more? First, is your current savings strategy right for your money? Choose the highest yield options appropriate for your financial status, the plans for the savings, and the total amount you have to invest. Smart management of your savings can help your money make money. You may also have heard the suggestion to pay yourself first. Making a point of putting money into savings from each paycheck, even if it is only a small amount will help you save more. You could also consider using a bank that offers savings incentives for your checking account. At least one major bank rounds up your purchases and puts the difference into your savings. Finally, one of the smartest moves for financial health is simple. Spend less. You may be spending money you are not aware of or spending on things that simply do not matter to you. Take the time to track your spending. You will likely find that you are spending on things that you could give up painlessly. Do you have a gym membership you do not use or a coffee habit from the kiosk down the street? Simple cutbacks on incidental spending can save a lot. You might also consider whether you could eat in a bit more often, rent a DVD instead of going out to a movie, or take advantage of free local activities. While you may envision a budget as leaving you pinching every penny and worrying, in reality simple changes can make a big difference. |
